The Temple of Demeter, located near the inland village of Sangri, is a remarkable site. Constructed between 530-520 BC, nearly a century before the Parthenon of the Acropolis, it showcases exquisite Naxian marble. When complete, the temple featured a series of outer and inner Ionic columns supporting a roof, along with sculptures and marble votives characteristic of an ancient sanctuary.
This traditional pottery workshop produces items for both functional and decorative purposes, offering visitors an up-close look at the craftsman’s creative process as he shapes the clay from start to finish.
Nestled among high mountains and cultivated valleys, surrounded by citrus trees and olive groves, lies perhaps one of Naxos’ most beautiful villages: Halki. Everywhere you turn in Halki, history is evident—in the renowned Byzantine churches dotting the surrounding fields, the neo-classical facades of centuries-old merchant villas, and the time-worn marble roads leading to the quintessentially Cycladic town square. It's no surprise to learn that Halki was once the island's historic capital.
Apeiranthos is a stunning mountain village on the island of Naxos, seemingly untouched by time and still bearing the marks of the Venetian era. The village's architectural design has remained largely unchanged since the Venetian Empire, featuring narrow, marble-paved mule tracks often covered by archways, Venetian defense towers showcasing the fortifications of the era, two-story stone houses with distinctive architectural details, and quaint squares.
